The City of Indianapolis committed $19.6 million to a project targeting one of its major east/west arteries, 38th Street, originally dubbed Maple Road. Once a residential corridor, later also a site for small commercial districts that served burgeoning northern suburbs, 38th Street evolved into a conduit across the city rather than a destination in itself. The city’s revitalization plan included resurfacing, curbs, sidewalks, medians, signals, and signage. The budget did not include landscaping maintenance and decorative signage built into the original vision for the renovation project.
The Maple Road Development Association includes representatives of groups, organizations, institutions, and other civic entities served by the 38th street corridor and directly affected by the project. To assure that the renovation project could reach its full potential, MRDA began a $1.5 million fundraising campaign.
B Plus C Communications created a case study that highlighted the history, heritage, and promise of the area, and the advantages of fulfilling all aspects of the renovation project.
