Nearly a decade after the events of September 11, 2001, the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey began accepting petitions from communities that wanted to develop local 9/11 memorials. Petitioners whose plans gained acceptance received Ground Zero artifacts to incorporate into their sites of remembrance. Indianapolis firefighter and paramedic Greg Hess, who had spent more than a week working at Ground Zero as part of Indiana Task Force One, sought approval to receive artifacts for an Indianapolis memorial.
With civic support, the memorial took shape on the banks of the White River Canal. Two 22-foot-long World Trade Center beams formed the core of Project 9/11 Indianapolis.
B Plus C Communications created the initial fundraising brochure for the campaign to construct the memorial, telling the story of Greg Hess’s quest to build it and the local community’s support for the plan.
